This week I joined the Radiotherapy4Life campaign in Parliament to pledge my support for their push for greater investment into this treatment.
This is a new campaign that is advocating for a world class radiotherapy service for all. As many of you will know, this is a treatment that is used to kill cancer cells through aiming high-energy radiation at the tumour. It is used in the management of 50% of all cancer patients.
1 in 4 people in the UK will need radiotherapy at some point in their life and 40% of cancer cures are thanks to radiotherapy, alone or combined with other treatments.
This campaign is calling for the following points to be adopted across the UK:
1. A sustained additional £100m a year for radiotherapy in the UK to guarantee transformational change over the next 10 years.
2. A £250m one-off investment into a New Radiotherapy Centre Access Fund ringfenced to allow the development of satellite centres to end the postcode lottery.
3. The establishment of an independent accountable Radiotherapy Tsar with specific responsibility to develop a national strategy.
