I continue to campaign for the UK Government to take meaningful action against rip-off leasehold rent. Many people have purchased their homes in good faith from large building companies only to find that what was once peppercorn leasehold rent has been sold on to the highest bidder and now costs thousands of pounds a year.
As well as working closely with the people who live on these new housing estates, I wanted to know if the Government shared my concern about the loss of return on taxpayer funded Help to Buy.
These leasehold fees are making it harder to sell on a property and people are having to lower the price of their homes. The Government gets less back from its section of the mortgage in return. Failure to tackle leaseholds is not only a failure to support people, many in their first homes, but a failure to look after public funds.
