A few weeks ago Labour secured the released of the UK Government’s legal advice on the constitutional impacts of their Withdrawal Agreement. Or that’s what we thought.

We proposed a motion which was binding on the UK Government and it was won unanimously in Parliament. Instead of the full document being published, so the public can have an informed debate about the deal put before us, we got twenty-odd pages from the Attorney General instead.

This is not good enough. You wouldn’t rent a flat before looking inside and you certainly wouldn’t accept a deal which will fundamentally change our society and economy without knowing what the UK’s top lawyer thought.

At the statement I asked the Attorney General if he could give me legal advice on what I should do if a government ignored a binding motion and if this was in contempt of parliament.
