Last year there were 18,000 excess winter deaths because people couldn’t afford to heat their homes. The majority of people who die because of an inability to heat their homes are aged over 75. There are estimated to be 140,000 pensioner households in fuel poverty in Wales.
Turn2Us is a national charity that helps people in financial hardship to gain access to welfare benefits, charitable grants and support service when they are struggling to pay their heating bills. They provide this through an online service and with their partners in the Citizens Advice Bureau.
The charity is encouraging people to come forward if they are facing hardship.
Last year too many people died because they couldn’t heat their homes. Too many people are having to choose between heating their homes and putting food on the table. This must end and I welcome Turn2Us in its campaign to raise awareness of help available.
No one should have to choose between whether to keep their homes warm or have a meal. I urge anyone struggling to seek help from Turn2Us or if you are a constituent in Delyn please do not hesitate to contact my office and I will do all I can to help.
