Today, I asked the Minister of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Ed Vaizey MP, why the government is failing to support S4C.
S4C was established following a long and popular campaign, with many people sacrificing their freedom in the fight for its establishment. It is not an ordinary television channel, it is the only Welsh language TV channel in the world. Its importance to the language and cultures of Wales cannot be overstated.
S4C’s budget has seen a cut of around 40%, which has had a significant impact on the channel’s ability to provide a high quality and comprehensive television service. Since 2010, the vast majority of its remaining budget comes from the licence fee – an arrangement that threatens the channel’s independence – following a 93% cut to its grant by the Government.
