I asked the Home Secretary how fair she thought it was that people in North Wales were having to pay above inflation for the policing precept, in their council tax, to compensate the cuts she has imposed.
The Home Secretary stated that they have protected the policing budget, but that is not the whole story. It is the Police and Crime Commissioners who have had to raise the amount they receive from our council tax to mitigate the deep cuts that the UK Government has imposed.
Labour has continuously pressured the UK Government to ensure that neighbourhood policing is protected. Bobbies on the beat reassure communities and deter crime. It was introduced by Labour and proved to cut crime dramatically. The UK Government’s centrally imposed cuts are placing a significant burden on local policing and putting at risk the ability of our police to do their job.
