Delyn MP David Hanson has welcomed a new subsidised telephone shcme targeted at helping people on benefits.
BT Basic will offer line rental for £4.50 a month for up to 3 million vulnerable on low incomes – this equates to just £13.50 a quarter. The new scheme, which has the support of Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), Ofcom and consumer groups, will replace BT’s old Light User Scheme. Customers must receive or be eligible for, Income Support, income-based Job Seekers Allowance or Guaranteed Pensions Credit to qualify.
BT is contacting all customers all customers on existing social telephony schemes about moving to BT Basic, providing they meet the criteria agreed with the Department for Work and Pensions.
David Hanson said:
