Today, I signed Early Day Motion (EDM) 432 which pledged the support of the House of Commons to the Welsh Olympic team in their success at the Olympic Games in Rio.
The EDM reads:
That this House congratulates the 23 Welsh athletes representing Team GB at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games for their fantastic performance; notes the record-breaking haul of 10 Olympic medals; and recognises the particular achievement of medal-winners Elinor Barker, Owain Doull, Jade Jones, Hannah Mills, Becky James, Jazz Carlin, Victoria Thornley, Sam Cross and James Davies.
I have signed this EDM to put on record my support for Team Wales and to thank Jade Jones – the double gold winning Olympian from Flint – for her tremendous efforts in inspiring young people up and down the country to take up a sport.
It was a joy to join Jade Jones when she was welcomed to Flint after winning her gold medal in Taekwondo. Our community really came together in celebration; showing the best of Flintshire.
Jade has also put Flint firmly on the map for a new generation and has ensured that a generation of children can see what can be achieved if you put your mind to it. It’s positive that the House of Commons has also now recognised formally these achievements
Signing this Early Day Motion ensures that it is on record that MPs are proud of how well Team Wales did at the Olympic Games in Rio this summer.
