I raised my concerns with the Minister that there has been another fall in conviction rates for rape and domestic violence. Rape has seen a 5.6% fall in conviction to little over 56% and domestic violence has also seen a fall.
There is something going wrong in our criminal justice system. Conviction rates falling continuously for four years should flag to the Government that action must be taken. We should be asking ourselves are people provided with the care and support to go through the process of prosecuting someone. If not why?
The Minister blamed the fall on the rise in cases taken to court. But it is a fall in percentage terms that we are seeing. Therefore, the Government is failing on some level to help those who are taking a case to court. We need action not excuses.
