I have been trying to help a number of constituents in Ysceifiog. Lixwm and Bagillt who have been struggling to get any help or support from BT Openreach. BT Openreach is the company responsible for the installation of fibreoptic broadband in the UK and they have demonstrated that they are unable to do the work adequately. This is leaving more rural communities locked out of decent broadband speeds.

Over two years ago Ofcom announced that BT must separate itself from Openreach. Time has slowly marched on and BT Openreach is still a combined entity. I wanted to know from the minister when the official date for splitting the two businesses would occur. The first time I asked this the minister didn’t give an answer. Not to be deterred I used my second question to press once more. Finally I got the answer of April 2018.

However, the response from BT Openreach is a problem now. That is why I have written to BT about their failings and the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. The Government need to get a grip of this business and ensure that people can finally have access to broadband.
