Yesterday, I attended a presentation by the Police Federation on the impact of assaults on the police and all other emergency workers.

At the event case studies were given by police officers who have been attacked whilst fulfilling their duty and protecting our communities. The session also outlined what the Police Federation were proposing to assist in such cases and indeed what needs to be done to provide a safer working environment. I condemned the figures released by Usdaw – the Union of Shop, distributive and allied workers – showing that 1 in 10 shopworkers have been assaulted at work. But even more concerning Usdaw have learnt that nearly a third do not report it.

USDAW is the UK’s fourth largest union in the country representing 435,000 members nationwide. They represent members in:

• Warehouses and distribution
• Food manufacturing
• Dairies
• Pharmaceuticals
• Home shopping
