Mental Health Units (Use of Force) Bill

There were a number of Private Members’ Bills I wanted to vote on this week. One was votes at 16 the other was my colleague, Steve Reed’s, Mental Health Units (Use of Force) Bill. This Bill aims to make provision about the oversight and management of the appropriate use of force in relation to people in mental health units and similar institutions; to make provision about the use of body cameras by police officers in the course of duties in relation to people in mental health units; and for connected purposes.

The Bill will only impact upon England, but I support it as I hope that as the Bill progresses we can work with the Welsh Assembly to see it have a positive impact for Wales.

I intervened in the opening speeches and made this point to my colleague and I was grateful for his response and willingness to work with the Welsh Assembly Government.

There was a positive outcome for this Bill as it passed its Second Reading and will now move onto Committee Stage where it will be scrutinised and amendments added to make it work effectively.
