Meeting with Flint apprentice

Yesterday, I met with local apprentice Sinead Beck, who is working with Magellan, and her supervisor Dave Evans in Parliament to celebrate the aerospace, defence, security and space sectors apprenticeship schemes.

This was a great opportunity for MPs to find out more about our industries and celebrate the 11,000 apprenticeships provided by companies in these sectors. It was organised by ADS. ADS is the trade association representing over 1,000 companies, including 900 SMEs, across the UK’s Aerospace, Defence, Security and Space sectors. From technology to exports, to apprenticeships and investment, our sectors are vital to the UK’s growth – generating £72bn a year for the UK economy, including £37bn in exports, and directly providing 363,000 jobs.

The aerospace and defence sectors are important for Flintshire. We have the Broughton centre of excellence which provides numerous jobs in Delyn.

Magellan Aerospace is a global aerospace company that provides complex assemblies and system solutions to aircraft and engine manufacturers, and defence and space agencies around the world. They design, engineer and manufactures aeroengine and aerostructure assemblies and components for aerospace markets, advance products for military and space markets, industrial power generation and speciality products.

It was a pleasure to meet Sinead and to hear what value she is getting from her apprenticeship. I believe that it is important that we ensure that everyone who wants to gain an apprenticeship has the ability to do so. Getting started in such a highly skilled job ensures that people can have pride in their work and pride in their achievements.

I want to see more highly skilled jobs coming to Delyn and the surrounding area so that we can provide more people with the opportunity that Sinead has. Going forward, the only way we can ensure that we have a robust local economy is through reskilling the workforce into specialist jobs that pay a decent days wage.

The importance of the aerospace industry to our corner of Wales should never be understated. I am proud to have companies such as Airbus and its supply chain support businesses in Flintshire. We have proven the world over that we have a dedicated, efficient and skilled workforce that cannot be beaten. I look forward to working with local employers to help them expand to new markets in the near future; providing more skilled jobs for our community.
