Hannah Blythyn – AM for Delyn – and I today welcome the news that, in addition to the development of an enhanced visitor experience with a new visitor centre, there will be funding for a major open competition to design and build a world class installation. It will be located in the castle walls.
The installation will form an essential element of the branding of 2017 Wales as The Year of Legends.
This will be the most valuable piece of public art to be installed in Wales in recent memory and will compete with the Angel of the North for global recognition. This truly will be a lasting legacy of The Year of Legends.
The competition will be completely open to all. A shortlist of proposals will be drawn up by a panel of judges from CADW and Arts Council Wales, with a final decision being taken later this year.

Flint Castle will be the most significant Welsh Castle for 2017 Year of Legends as a result of unprecedented Welsh Government investment. The Welsh Government care passionately about ensuring that our history and heritage is promoted. Especially the rich history of Flintshire, which is second to none.
I am proud of our cultural history in Flintshire. Not only is it important that we secure this for future generations, but we proudly display it to everyone who visits us. This announcement does just that.
This investment follows on from the additional capital investment made by the Welsh Government earlier this year in Theatr Clwyd and the International Eisteddfod. I will work with the Welsh Government to ensure that we remain the go-to destination for tourism and education in north Wales.
I believe this excellent news continues to bring Flintshire to the rest of the world. We have already demonstrated our ability to proudly display our history and heritage through the Urdd National Eisteddfod.
Flint Castle’s links to legends is unparalleled, with ties to historic legends and literary legends. I hope that this history will inspire artists in their competition submission. I urge all artists to get in involved in this once in a lifetime opportunity.
The history of Flint Castle should be celebrated worldwide. From Richard II deposition to Shakespeare’s play, the Castle is iconic and this will help promote the town and increase visitors and tourists to Flintshire.
