Yesterday, I asked the Minister of State, Rory Stewart MP, about the import of lion products.
I have been contacted by a large number of constituents asking me to write to the Minister in question, which I have and I am waiting upon a response, but I used Environment, Food and Rural Affairs question time to press home how important this matter is. It is vitally important that we bring about an end to Illegal Wildlife Trade, and I fear that the UK Government is dragging its heels.
Australia and France have both banned the use and import of lion products, but the UK still has not done so. A simple measure can dramatically cut the demand for these vile products. But as yet the Government has not done this.
The Minister stated that the Government is only looking at what Australia and France are doing. For me this is acting too slowly. The UK used to be a world leader in promoting environmental policies around the world. Now we only follow other nations. Rest assured I will continue to pressure the Government on ending Illegal Wildlife Trade, both at home and abroad.
