Yesterday, I asked the Minister of State for Defence Procurement, Philip Dunne MP, what steps his department is taking to support British jobs especially in the UK Steel industry.
The new Royal Navy offshore patrol boats 60% of the steel was procured from Sweden with only 20% coming from UK steel mills.
The Ministry of Defence should be doing so much more to ensure that our steel industry, which is facing the biggest threats in its history, is given all the support and encouragement it needs. In Wales we have seen huge job losses in the steel industry and the future of mills is looking bleak.
The Government’s approach to this crisis is to sit back and do nothing. Compare this to other nations who are using public policy to protect jobs and a vital industry, we can see the Government is letting down one of our most valued industries.
