Banning Wild Animals in Circuses

Today, I supported the Ten Minute Rule Bill to introduce a ban on wild animals in circuses.

This is the second time that a Bill has been proposed on a total ban of wild animals in circuses in the same number of years. The last Bill, which I also supported, was blocked by a group of Conservative Backbench MPs.

17 nations have already banned wild animals in circuses including:

• Austria
• Bolivia
• Bosnia and Herzegovina
• Columbia
• Costa Rica
• Croatia
• Cyprus
• El Salvador

This Bill was supported by the House of Commons and now will by brought forward in the form of a Bill.

The UK has a proud history of protecting animals. Shamefully, the Government has dragged its heels on bringing forward a ban on wild animals in circuses. This is something that needs doing now, not later.

Circuses are no place for wild animals. The complex needs of wild animals can never be adequately met in a circus environment. Regular transport, cramped and bare temporary housing, forced training and performance are all unavoidable realities for these animals.

I will continue to support any Bill brought forward that looks to end the use of wild animals in circuses.
